In his feature article in the September 7th New York Times Magazine, Michael Ignatieff contended that the Bush administration's insistence that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction was never the main reason for the recent U.S.-led invasion. According to Ignatieff, the war's main purpose was "consolidating American power in the Arab world." He quoted Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz as saying that the intelligence used to justify force in Iraq was "murky." The administration has thereby created a situation where it will fail in Iraq.
