Celebrations of the Ford Motor Co.'s first century have concentrated mostly on the cars. That's because cars were mostly what Ford made. But Ford also made a contribution to commercial aviation that was at least as important as the Model T was to commercial automobiles.
The Ford Tri-Motor was the first mass-produced, fully reliable commercial aircraft ever made... or at least you could make a pretty good argument that it was.
Tri-Motors were simple, rugged, reliable and incredibly utilitarian, like really well-designed minivans of the skies. They could be configured to carry from nine to 15 passengers including a crew of two, or they could carry mail or whatever you wanted to put in them.
