CART to Vegas
As expected, CART released a tentative schedule at Miami, tentative because it included up to 21 race venues but no dates. As offered, the 2004 schedule includes 15 "confirmed'' races. All were on CART's 2003 schedule, except Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The confirmed dates include California Speedway at Fontana, which is contracted with CART for one more year, though Fontana could still fall off if both sides agree to part. The Milwaukee Mile is the third confirmed oval. CART's tentative schedule lists six venues to be confirmed, with several races expected to be cut by new management. On the chopping block: Brands Hatch, Eurospeedway Lausitz, Laguna Seca, Portland and Mid-Ohio. CART team owner Paul Gentilozzi said CART's potential new ownership would honor all existing contracts unless both sides agree to end the relationship. Brands Hatch, Laguna and Portland all have contracts with CART for next season. If half of the to-be-confirmed venues return, CART would have 18 race dates, down from 19 this year.
New Jag engine
Rocketsports team owner Paul Gentilozzi and driver Scott Pruett tested Jaguar's new 32-valve, overhead-cam fuel-injected 4.5-liter AJ-V8 Trans-Am engine. The engine took several laps around Indy's Putnam Park course and Miami, and Rocketsports expects to race it Oct. 26 at the Trans-Am finale in Puerto Rico.
