2003 OCT 8 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- A large study shows that simplified antiretroviral treatment regimens containing Viramune (nevirapine) or efavirenz offer comparable efficacy and safety in patients who switched from a protease inhibitor (PI)-based regimen.
Viramune and efavirenz are both nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs).
They are used in combination with other antiviral therapies to treat patients with HIV-1 infection. The nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), abacavir, was also evaluated in the study.
"These findings are significant because physicians are looking for alternatives to protease inhibitor regimens due to their high pill burden and food restrictions or concerns about metabolic side effects. NNRTIs like Viramune and efavirenz provide a viable option," said Jose M. Gatell, MD, PhD, senior consultant and head, infectious diseases & AIDS units of the Hospital Clinic in Barcelona and investigator for the study.
"These results offer additional evidence that VIRAMUNE has comparable efficacy to efavirenz in HIV-infected patients, which was demonstrated earlier this year in the 2NN ...
