Mortgage rates tumble this week
The 30-year fixed-rate mortgage dived 21 basis points to 5.77%, Freddie Mac said. The 15-year fixed rate fell 20 basis points to 5.10%. Both hit their lowest levels since mid-July. The one-year adjustable fell 5 basis points to 3.72%, the lowest since the end of July. Lower rates could keep housing strong and revive declining refinancing activity.
Fed officials fret over job market
Chicago Fed President Michael Moskow said it will take two strong quarters and the start of a jobs rebound to assure him the economy is out of the woods. Philadelphia Fed President Anthony Santomero said job gains will come slowly because of technological change and globalization. Fed Gov. Ben Bernanke said the timing of a job-market recovery is the toughest question.
