Porter-Gaud School will break ground later this month for a new kindergarten building, a first for the 136-year-old private academy west of the Ashley.
The 5,000-square-foot kindergarten structure, designed to resemble a traditional red-brick schoolhouse, will open next fall and provide three classrooms, a science and discovery area, and a multipurpose space for a limited enrollment of 45 students, according to Headmaster Stephen Blanchard.
He said applications for the fall 2004 kindergarten class are being accepted. But competition for the 45 seats is already intense.
