Byline: MARK VAUGHN
In a battle that may rival the great Mustang vs. Camaro car magazine staple of yore, we bring you STi vs. Evo. It's today's version of Ford vs. Chevy, Yankees vs. Mets, Good vs. Evil.
Both are ultra-performance, near-race car versions of their makers' more tame compact sedans; both are a step or two removed from the race versions that challenge for dominance on the World Rally stage; and both are here in new versions following long, long years during which their predecessors were only offered to buyers overseas.
We scrutinized both, ran each one through our usual battery of tests, and can firmly say that... they're both darn good.
The STi makes 300 hp and 300 lb-ft of torque. The Evo makes 271 hp and 273 lb-ft. Both have fancy little spray nozzles to cool their intercoolers, though the Evo's is upright in the front grille while the STi's is horizontal and sits under the hood scoop. Both have all-wheel drive and list their curb weights at 3263 pounds.
In a straight line the STi is quicker and faster. It went from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.78 seconds; the Evo wasn't far behind at 5.19 seconds. The STi did the quarter in 13.36 seconds at 100.2 mph while the Evo did it in 14.01 at 96.5.
So it looks like the STi wins, right? Not yet, Yoshi.
