With GM Europe (Opel, Saab, GM Daewoo and parts of Fiat) facing much-publicized business challenges, it's nice to report that Opel's turnaround shows signs of progress, specifically in the Meriva.
Europeans call it either a compact MPV (multi-purpose vehicle) or a small MAV (multi-activity vehicle). We call it NFUSS- not for U.S. sale. Though these minis can certainly handle open highway drives and vacation runs, they are better suited as the new workhorses of the urban and suburban family. Accordingly, the Meriva is-in the tradition of all Opels-outstanding at maneuvering in Europe's tight medieval streets or slaloming between groups of tourist zombies. Size-wise, the Meriva is nearly 11 inches shorter in length than its Zafira MPV sibling, but its wheelbase is shorter by only 2.5 inches and width downsizes by less than two inches. This makes the Meriva a better drive on all roads vs. the Zafira, yet it is still remarkably spacious inside.
