British and European STis boast only 262 hp, short of the WRC limit of 300, the standard output in America. So why aren't Europeans green with envy?
The answer is called the Subaru Impreza WRX STi Type UK Prodrive and we got three days in it in the wilds of Wales, where roads are no more than paved sheep drovers trails and thick hedges leave no shoulder for bail-out maneuvers. Until autumn 2002, the factory-approved, dealer-installed Prodrive performance pack included only cosmetics and suspension upgrades. Then Prodrive gave the package some guts: 301 hp and 299 lb-ft worth. Top speed is limited to 155 mph and 0 to 60 mph happens in 4.6 seconds vs. the standard U.K. version at 148 mph and 5.4 seconds.
