Many companies are turning to the penguin.
The web-footed bird is the symbol of Linux, the open source operating system. Open source means that its blueprint -- "source" code -- is available for free.
Software developers can tinker and tweak the OS as they like.
Open source is catching on. Market researchers say Linux, in all of its various forms, will grow at least as fast as, if not faster than, Microsoft Corp.'s Windows OS.
The biggest Linux distributor in Europe is SuSE Inc. It's at the center of a new group of worldwide Linux developers called UnitedLinux. They're combining resources to battle market leader Red Hat Inc.
SuSE is also expanding operations in the U.S. in an effort to take market share from Red Hat.
