PetroKazakhstan may lose profit
Shares of the oil firm, based in Canada but operating largely out of Kazakhstan, fell 12% amid reports that the central Asian county will confiscate "monopoly profit" allegedly from inflated prices. The ex-Soviet republic has a history of government squabbles, and courts there have overturned similar moves in the past. PetroKazak said the government hasn't said anything.
AEP sued over natural gas prices
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission sued American Electric Power for reporting fake gas prices from Nov. '00-Oct. '02. More than 75%, or about 2,800 of trades reported, in those two years were fake, the CFTC alleged. AEP created a computer spreadsheet called "IFERC Bogus" to prepare fake prices during those years. AEP fell 1%.
** Federal energy regulators mailed surveys to 266 industrial customers to see if utilities and energy traders have reformed how they report prices to trade publishers such as Platts and Gas Daily. Some gave publications fake data to boost prices.
