Everyone over 50 years of age should have their cholesterol measured, says Dr Sarah Wilson

CHD is a major cause of mortality and morbidity in the UK. The management of non-fatal heart disease consumes a major proportion of the current healthcare budget and has a huge detrimental effect on the quality of life of both patients and their relatives.

Because of this, CHD prevention is one of the top priorities for both healthcare professionals and government.

The NSF for CHD outlines a strategy by which people at particularly high risk of future heart disease are identified, and offered intensive lifestyle advice and drug treatments.
