Plans include two South Valley bridges, but they may never be built

The dedication of the Montano bridge tonight may be the last such ceremony for a long time.

Officials predict it will be many years before Albuquerque builds another bridge across the Rio Grande.

"I don't see the need," said Mayor Martin Chavez, who pushed hard for the Montano bridge. "I do think Montano needs to have more lanes. But in terms of another span, I don't see it."

Bernalillo County Commissioner Ken Sanchez was a boy when the Montano bridge was first discussed. Sanchez, whose district includes the North Valley and part of the West Side, thinks Albuquerque needs more …
