'A Shining Season,' first published 20 years ago, was William Buchanan's tribute to the heroic Albuquerque athlete and teacher.
Twenty years after his book "A Shining Season" was first published, Albuquerque author William Buchanan is still spreading the story of a man he never met.
"You are sitting in one of the most famous schools in the world," Buchanan told students at John Baker Elementary School last month. Buchanan, 72, is partially responsible for the school's renown -- it was he who spread the story of the school's namesake throughout the world.
"Everywhere I go the subject of John Baker always comes up," Buchanan told the students, unusually attentive and filled with questions of their own. "I am always talking about John Baker."
With the book's anniversary and presentations in schools throughout the city, Buchanan hopes to bring Baker's story to a new generation.
