The obituary in my hometown newspaper was only a few words long, but it was a poignant finale to one of the best sports stories I ever heard.
Edward "Eddy" Page died in Carlsbad, N.M., at the age of 80, according to the Shelbyville, (Ind.) News. It said that he was a graduate of Shelbyville High School and was an outstanding college athlete playing on a nationally ranked team.
What it didn't say was that Eddy Page was a hero in World War II and that he was one of six brothers from a rollicking family of outstanding athletes and teachers and citizens that included in later years a nephew, Mike Phipps, the former Purdue great and Cleveland Browns quarterback.
