Mormons break ground on first N.M. temple.

Mormon officials met in the Far Northeast Heights this morning to break ground for New Mexico's first Mormon temple, expected to be complete in the year 2000.

The temple will serve New Mexico's 55,500 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, known as the Mormon Church.

The temple at Eubank Boulevard and San Francisco Drive Northeast in North Albuquerque Acres isn't predicted to draw big crowds of worshipers at any one time, mostly because of the distinct nature of the Mormon religion.
