For a while, maybe for a semester, probably not forever, Kenny Thomas has hacked himself out of the dark woods of controversy to stand in a sun-filled clearing.

It is a clearing of promise and potential for this University of New Mexico basketball player.

It is a meadow with no ugly initials to block the sun and ruin his day -- no NCAA, no DWI, no enemy fans waving signs asking, "Can you spell SAT, Kenny?"

And even though some of the nasty times in the woods were of Thomas' own making, it is easy to hope that this man-child finds smooth sailing the rest of the way in.

Because Kenny Thomas surely has endured …
