In Friday's semifinal, UNM posts up against a seasoned SMU team
LAS VEGAS, Nev. It was probably an easy thing for coach Don Flanagan to heed the halftime request of Lobo Nikki Heckroth for more zone defense against Texas Christian.
Flanagan is learning that "zones" work well for the University of New Mexico in the Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament.
Flanagan's team used a zone of confidence in 1998 to roll unexpectedly from the No. 4 seed of its bracket to the title.
In Wednesday's quarterfinal matchup with TCU, Lobo Miranda Sanchez fell into a shooter zone during a 23-point, 8-of-10 shooting first half that kept UNM in the game.
So, it made good sense for Flanagan to toss a bug-quick zone in the Horned Frogs' faces to key a second-half Lobo surge that earned UNM a 74-62 win and a spot in the semifinals at 1 p.m. …
