LOS ALAMOS -- Explosives have contaminated groundwater under Los Alamos National Laboratory, deep in the aquifer that supplies the area's drinking water, but the lab says contamination hasn't hit municipal supplies.

State and lab officials said Wednesday they know little about the extent of contamination, discovered in a new monitoring well. They said they don't know whether the plume is moving toward the water supply and if so, how fast.

"This is just the first little bit of information. We're reserving judgment until we know more about the plume," said Greg Lewis, director of the state Environment Department's …
