Some city councilors will try to temporarily freeze hiring at City Hall next month to give themselves a chance to comb through the city budget.
The 16-day hiring freeze would affect all positions except public-safety jobs, such as police, fire and corrections officers.
The freeze, which would need to be approved by the nine-member City Council, would start May 3 and last through May 19 the day the council is expected to adopt a budget.
Councilors said they think the hiring freeze is necessary so they can get a "true picture" of how many employees City Hall has.
