Tribes band against tobacco companies.

The pueblos of Acoma, Isleta, Laguna, Picuris, Zia and Zuni and 28 other American Indian tribes are joining to sue major tobacco companies in New Mexico's 1st District Court.

Tribal leaders and attorneys for the tribes announced details today at a news conference in Albuquerque.

No dollar amount has been stated as being sought by the tribes.

The lawsuit, filed today in Santa Fe, alleges in part that the tobacco companies including the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Co., as well as such industry giants as the R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. have violated the state's Unfair Practices Act.
