Some energy department officials are worried that nuclear weapons secrets might be revealed if a former Los Alamos National Laboratory scientist is tried on charges that he was spying for the Chinese.

Gen. Eugene E. Habiger, DOE's new head of security, said senior-level officers are studying the issue to define what sensitive information can be presented publicly to jurors without impairing U.S. national security.

But Habiger insisted his agency will not be a "bureaucratic" obstacle for prosecutors, led by U.S. Attorney John J. Kelly in New Mexico.
