John Sanchez was well-known as a baseball, football and golf coach, but was best known to many Albuquerqueans simply as "Boom Boom" a tip of the hat to his skill on the pitcher's mound.

Sanchez, who suffered from diabetes, died Friday after complications from surgery he underwent three months ago. He was 54.

For 26 years, Sanchez's strength and drive influenced many students in the Albuquerque Public Schools.

Sanchez worked as a teacher, coach and counselor at Five Points Elementary, Washington Middle School, Albuquerque High School, West Mesa High School and Rio Grande High School. He also …
