Albuquerque businessman Paul J. Salazar died Monday. He was 76.

Salazar never strayed far from his childhood home.

Born at home on Nov. 27, 1923, in the 300 block of Third Street, he grew up around Downtown, attending Downtown schools, including the old Albuquerque High School, where he graduated in 1941.

One of the few times he left his Downtown neighborhood was after high school, when he served in World War II and fought near Bastogne, Belgium, in the Battle of the Bulge.

In 1946, his brother Lester and his father Frank established Salazar and Sons Mortuary, just a few doors down …
