Software watchdog catches local company.(Business)

The Bell Group will pay the Business Software Alliance $145,000 to settle a lawsuit related to unlicensed and counterfeit copies of software programs.

The Albuquerque company had purchased unlicensed and counterfeit copies of software programs over online auctions, BSA said. The company agreed to destroy the software.

"This case illustrates that companies are ultimately responsible for ensuring that they acquire legitimate software," said Bob Kruger, vice president of enforcement for the BSA. "A lot of the software for sale on Internet auction sites is pirated or otherwise unauthorized and buyers need to be careful."
