From the wreckage of this year's contract talks, the Albuquerque Teachers Federation and Albuquerque Public Schools leaders are trying to salvage a better way to negotiate.

Five union leaders met with the district's top managers and three members of the school board Tuesday night in a closed meeting intended to start better relationships and better bargaining.

"As we move forward with Performance Counts, there's an understanding that in order to make it happen . . . we have to be working more as a team," school board president Richard Toledo said in an interview.
