SANTA FE The Senate Rules Committee has unanimously approved a change to the Legislature's rules to require that conference committees be open to the public.

A conference committee, typically just a handful of lawmakers, negotiates a final compromise when the House and Senate have passed different versions of the same bill.

The New Mexico Press Association and the New Mexico Foundation for Open Government have lobbied for several years to open the sessions.
