COLUMBUS For the second time in seven months, a group of Russians has crossed the border here from Mexico seeking political asylum in the United States.

Seven Russian immigrants were detained last week and have asked for a deportation hearing, said U.S. Border Patrol supervisory agent Jon Hays.

"One of the agents spoke some Russian, and we were able to discover they were fleeing Russia because of religious persecution," he said. "They said they wanted to apply for political asylum in the United States."

Hays said the group had flown from Moscow to Mexico City, and all had valid Mexican tourist visas.
