To Brian Urlacher, being on time for training camp was more important to him than a few more stacks of C-notes in his bank account.

That's why the former University of New Mexico football star and first-round pick of the Chicago Bears signed on Friday, much earlier than anticipated. Urlacher, who was chosen ninth overall in the 2000 NFL Draft, was just the fourth first-round pick to consummate a deal.

He will be paid a base salary in the neighborhood of $8 million during the next five years. Including incentives = from Rookie of the Year and Pro Bowl honors to reaching a specified amount of downs …
