Brian Anthony Heppler's mother described the 20-year-old as a "good boy who had done a bad thing," but his prosecutor said that just isn't so.
"His criminal history shows Heppler is a bad boy who did a bad thing," Assistant District Attorney Richard Watts said during Heppler's sentencing hearing Thursday in Albuquerque.
Heppler, who was found guilty of first-degree murder in the 1999 shooting death of 19-year-old Orlando F. Olivas, was sentenced by state District Judge Neil Candelaria to a total of 32 years in prison, with 10 years suspended and five years of supervised probation upon release. …
