APS wise to bide its time on retooling school starts

Sometimes, the wise ruler must listen to the people, even when he believes they're wrong.

Rather than impose an innovative reform from on high, Albuquerque Public Schools Superintendent Brad Allison this week heeded the protests of some parents, teachers, staff members and students, and chose not to change starting times at the Manzano and Valley high school clusters this fall.

It was a good decision.

Allison is pressing for reforms on a number of fronts. Some of the troops are edgy and complain he ignores their concerns. The school-start decision is a sign that he hears them and takes…
