* You don't have to rear-end a guy's car to get him to ask for your number. But making sure he calls once he's acquired your digits? That's the hard part.
There's a litany of reasons why a man flakes on following through, says Neil Clark Warren, Ph.D., author of Date ... or Soul Mate. And often, they have zilch to do with how call-worthy he thinks you are. "Even when a guy is intrigued by a woman, he might let his own insecurities deter him," Warren claims. A less complex explanation: He got caught up in the daily grind and phoning you fell to the bottom of his to-do list.
Fear not. Certain things you do during that first encounter can guarantee that a guy makes good on his "I'll call you" promise. Here's the plan of action, and yes, it includes a trick or two.
show him something
Many women instinctively put up a protective front during the initial conversation. While justified, it often kicks off a self-fulfilling prophecy: You hold back, he doesn't think you're into him, and he doesn't call. "Giving him access to what makes you tick shows that you're friendly and puts him at ease," says Warren.
That doesn't mean you need to wear your heart on your sleeve. Simply let your guard down a bit, says Jackson *, 26. "I was talking to this girl and I noticed she had it tattoo of an Asian symbol on her shoulder," he recalls. "She explained that she'd taught English in Japan and she wanted a reminder of how much the experience shaped her. She struck me as such a down-to-earth person."
Flaunting your sense, of humor also keeps you at the forefront of his noggin. If he can see himself watching Dumb and Dumber--style flicks with you on a Saturday afternoon, calling will likely become the must-do next step. "I noticed this woman at a party," explains Steve, 27. "She was digging into a plate of ribs and got sauce on her blouse. When I offered to bring her a washcloth, she said, 'Well, I was going to lick it off, but okay, if you insist," which made us both laugh. There was something so attractive about her nonchalant attitude."
