Say this for the directors of the New York Stock Exchange: In the space of a week, they managed to reduce the average compensation for the Big Board's CEO from $140 million to $70,000,000.50. But while the machers of the market managed to convince former Citigroup Inc. chairman John Reed to serve as temporary chieftain for $1, they likely will be forced to offer somewhat more to entice someone -- anyone -- to take Dick Grasso's old job permanently. And they might have to throw in a racehorse and a beer distributorship.
