2003 OCT 1 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has announced it will give $55 million to help develop a vaccine to prevent dengue and dengue hemorrhagic fever, an increasing problem in developing countries.
The grant for the neglected mosquito-transmitted fever will establish clinical trial sites in Asia and South America.
The grant was given to the International Vaccine Institute to support the Pediatric Dengue Vaccine Initiative. PDVI is an international consortium of leading researching institutions, public health organizations and private industry.
Dengue is caused by a group of four viruses that infect 50 million to 100 million people and is on the rise globally.
In its most severe form, dengue hemorrhagic fever, dengue infection can result in shock, hemorrhages and death.
The foundation said introduction of a dengue vaccine could prevent more than 500,000 hospitalizations and 3000 deaths annually, primarily among children.
