2003 MazdaSpeed Protege
Date in fleet: Aug. 8-18 As-tested price: $21,000 Powertrain: 2.0-liter turbocharged I4; fwd, five-speed manual Hp: 170 @ 6000 rpm Torque: 160 @ 3500 rpm Curb weight: 2843 pounds
GRITZINGER: At this price, the car is pretty cool, with a nice array of add-ons from the rear wing to the racy steering wheel to the wild Kenwood audio system to the turbo under the hood. The short shifter is snick-snick, but I'd like a little bit more length to work with. Steering is right-now, if a little overboosted. The engine and suspension work well together, even if they're a little noisy-what is that loud thump in the rear? I'm not the right demographic, but I'm pretty sure the sound wasn't coming from a subwoofer. And I'd think twice about these tires-they tram around worse than any small car I've ever driven.
2003 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa
Date in fleet: Aug. 25-Sept. 2 As-tested price: $85,225 Powertrain: 3.6-liter H6; rwd, six-speed manual Hp: 315 @ 6800 rpm Torque: 273 @ 4250 rpm Curb weight: 3114 pounds
MORRISON: Regardless of which version you select-Targa, Carrera, C4S, Cabriolet-the 911 is the world's best car. Period. It may not be the fastest, it may not be the best-looking. But one shot behind the wheel of this car is all you need to understand Porschephiles. Whenever I am fortunate enough to drive a 911, I take full advantage. I was still driving at 1 a.m. this morning, I just couldn't bring myself to get out of the car. With the Targa top open, the radio on and the wind in my hair, it was like a dream. And now that I'm back at work, it's like I just woke up, only to realize the dream is over. Until next time...
