In late July, Private Jessica Lynch returned to her home in Elizabeth, West Virginia. Arriving in a Black Hawk helicopter, Private Lynch was greeted by a large and enthusiastic crowd, which included Governor Bob Wise. Lynch, declared Governor Wise, "returns a renowned international figure and a symbol of the quiet courage and commitment of our armed forces."
Private Lynch was part of a U.S. convoy ambushed in Nasariyah, Iraq, on March 23rd. Initial press accounts of the battle described Jessica firing her rifle until it ran out of ammunition; she was then supposedly overpowered by superior numbers, shot, stabbed, and taken prisoner. U.S. Special Forces subsequently freed her in a dramatic raid on an Iraqi hospital.
According to the official Pentagon report of the incident, however, Lynch's injuries resulted when her truck, traveling at 45 miles per hour, collided with the vehicle ahead of it early in the ambush. Her rifle, like those of several other members of the convoy, was jammed. ...
