The press and Mercedes enthusiasts have focused their excitement on the upcoming Mercedes supercar, the SLR. And a few are as enthusiastic about the coming SL65 and CL65, as they should be. Those are going to be mighty good cars-fun to drive, gobs of power, and with sleek good looks. If you can't wait for the SLR, or even an SL65, may we suggest something that's almost as much whompin'-good fun: the Mercedes-Benz SL600.
The 600? What? The SL600 goes on sale in October with the twin-turbocharged V12 now found in the CL and S-Class, but in a nice, retractable hardtop body. The SL600's curb weight of 4429 pounds gives it one of the best power-to-weight ratios on the market: 8.98 pounds of car for each unit of hp (the CL600 is good, too, at 8.72; and the SL55 is even better at 8.68). True, the SL55 AMG has the same 493 hp as the SL600 and has a similar curb weight, but the SL600 makes 590 lb-ft of torque to the SL55's 516 lb-ft, meaning it could outdrag the AMG SL off the line (especially if both were towing boat ...
