2003 SEP 10 - (NewsRx.com & NewsRx.net) -- West Nile virus is advancing south through Mexico; 1.2% of horses tested were positive in the Yucatan in Mexico.
According to a study from the United States, "Serum samples were obtained from 252 horses in the State of Yucatan, Mexico, from July to October 2002.
"Antibodies to West Nile virus were detected by epitope-blocking ELISA in 3 (1.2%) horses and confirmed by plaque reduction neutralization test," wrote M.A. Loronopino and coauthors.
The researchers concluded: "We report the first West Nile virus activity in the State of Yucatan."
