Apax Partners Ltd. isn't one of the best-known names on Sand Hill Road, the venture capital Mecca of Silicon Valley.
But the London-based venture and private-equity firm has a worldwide presence that few can match. Started 30 years ago, the company manages over $12 billion worth of funds. Its investments span the globe and six industries: media, information technology, telecom, health care, consumer retail and financial services.
Since 1995, 52 of Apax's portfolio companies have gone public. Their combined market value at the time they went public was $29 billion.
Apax invests in both early-stage and late-stage companies. In the late-stage scenarios, it looks to buy out cash-strapped companies that have good fundamentals.
Paul Vais, who works in Apax's Sand Hill Road branch, handles information technology and telecom investments. He says now is as good a time as any to scout promising companies.
Vais spoke with IBD about the venture industry in a recent interview.
