Home loan demand dips in week
The Mortgage Bankers Association of America's overall gauge of mortgage applications fell 1.6% last week to 628.7. A gauge of demand for new home loans rose 5.5% to 396.1, just 14% below the late May peak. But refi applications fell 8.6% to 1981.5, the lowest level since June '02.
Chain-store sales strong in Aug.
Same-store sales at department and discount chains last week rose 0.1% from a week earlier and 4% from a year ago, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi and UBS said. Aug. same-store sales rose 1.3% from July and 3.8% from Aug. '02, Instinet Research said.
Consumer comfort gauge eases
The ABCNews/Money magazine Consumer Comfort Index dipped a point to -18 last week. Now 30% say the economy is in good shape and 37% think it's a good time to buy things, both down a percentage point in the week. A steady 56% say their own finances are healthy.
