Adtran ups Q3 sales, EPS outlook

The telecom gear maker says shipments are much higher than expected. It sees $98-$100 mil in sales, up about 12% -- the best in years -- and above analyst views of $94.1 mil. Its new profit forecast, 34-36 cents a share, up 30%, is 2 cents over analyst forecasts. Adtran surged 14% to 66.07, a three-year high.

WorldCom's Ebbers freed on bail

The ex-CEO was booked and pleaded innocent to charges by Okla.'s attorney general for breaking state securities laws. Though other execs face federal charges, these are the first against Bernard Ebbers or the company itself. A U.S. attorney called Okla.'s action "disappointing," saying the charges will interfere with a federal probe.

Nortel snags $1 bil wireless deal

Verizon Wireless, the joint venture of Verizon and Vodafone, is upgrading networks in several markets to offer more voice capacity, multimedia messaging and higher-speed Net access.
