One of my friends was fired from her job and broke up with her boyfriend, so she's been living with me for the past eight months. I come home from work every night to find her staring at the TV and pigging out. She's not even looking for work. I would like her just to leave, but she literally has nowhere to go. How do I deal with it?
You have been good to a friend in need, but you've reached your limit and she must be told. Her inactivity and pigging out are signs of depression, and unless she is shaken out of her comfortable cocoon, it will only get worse. So shake her. Tell her you need your space back. If it makes life easier for you, indulge in a fib: A family member turned up who needs a place to stay, you found a paying boarder, or you're taking up painting and need the extra room.
