Fearless factor: Five years ago, I traveled with a friend from Singapore to Cyprus on a 25-foot sailboat--and I'd never sailed before! At one point, the trade winds died and we were stranded in the middle of the ocean for nine days with limited fresh water. Then we were held up off the coast of Yemen by a boat full of pirates with machine guns. Those were the scariest 11 minutes of my life, but it was a fair trade-off for a year of amazing adventures.
Fun factor: I recently went with some friends to Hawaii to surf. I love being on the water and experiencing the natural world in such an intense way.
