NEW ORLEANS -- Fentanyl lozenges provided effective relief and reduced the number of emergency room visits for breakthrough pain in a case series of 20 people with acute, refractory migraines.

"Most of these people were going to the ER for a Demerol shot," Michael G. Jenson said at the annual meeting of the American Academy of Pain Medicine. He estimated the cost of an ER visit at $800 and the oral transmucosal fentanyl citrate lozenge at $7-$15 each.

He and his colleagues proposed that migraine sufferers could use the lozenge (marketed by Cephalon Inc. under the trade name Actiq) at home for breakthrough pain and avoid trips to the emergency room, said Mr. …
