NYSE stocks bolted higher Tuesday, as investors returned in earnest after the long weekend. The S&P 500 rose 1.4%, the Dow 1.1% on much higher volume compared with Friday's rush-for-the-Hamptons volume. The small-cap S&P 600 surged 1.7%.
Thor Industries vaulted 2.44 to a new high of 56.63 on brisk turnover. The maker of recreational vehicles completed its acquisition of Damon Corp., a deal expected to add 20 cents a share in profit to the firm's bottom line in fiscal 2004.
Thor said it now expects fiscal 2004 sales of about $1.8 billion.
Vimpel Communications advanced 1.57 to 55.48 on nearly twice its normal trade.
Last week, the Russian mobile phone service provider posted second-quarter earnings of $1.04 a share, up 136% year over year. Sales zoomed 76% to $304.4 million.
Vimpel and rival Mobile TeleSystems have been among the hottest stocks since the market hit bottom in October.
