Byline: JONAH KERI
When the Montreal Expos wanted a big-name pitcher, they traded three lesser-knowns for the privilege.
One of the three, Randy Johnson, had a mean fastball. But he was so wild, the Expos feared they'd never make a pitcher out of him.
Such were the beginnings of Johnson's major league career.
Johnson didn't fret, however. He'd taken the long-term view since he started playing, and he wasn't about to stop.
That view carried him to the pinnacle of his game.
He's won the Cy Young Award five times. He's been named a Major League All-Star nine times, named the World Series co-Most Valuable Player and led the league in strikeouts eight times, ERA four times, innings pitched twice and wins once.
