3 W. K. Kellogg invented wheat flakes accidentally while working at his brother's health spa in Battle Creek, Mich.
By the time he'd invented corn flakes, copycats had packed the small town, turning Battle Creek into a battleground for rip-off artists.
Their aim? Score their own breakfast bonanza.
Kellogg countered with a special K.O.: He outspent them on clever ads that set his products apart.
Most rivals turned tail, and Kellogg wound up dominating the cereal market.
For Kellogg, opportunity first hit while experimenting with boiled wheat paste to produce a healthier bread for spa patients. One night he unintentionally left a panful of the paste on a counter, and it dried out. After baking, it broke into flakes and tasted great. "I quickly duplicated the process," he later wrote.
