Stocks Rally As Volume Returns
1 Stock indexes marked 52-week highs on fresh signs of a faster economic recovery. The Nasdaq and small-cap S&P 600 led with 1.7% gains. The S&P 500 jumped 1.4%, the Dow 1.1%. U.S. Factories Picked Up In Aug.
2ISM's U.S. activity index rose 2.9 points to 54.7, better than forecast and the highest reading of 2003. The production index hit a four-year high. New orders grew the most since Jan. Outlook On Tech Gets Brighter
3Several reports bolster views that a tech industry recovery is taking hold. Goldman Sachs upgraded hardware and software sectors, and chips got a boost from Banc of America. Two polls by research groups suggest business spending on tech is rising. A chip industry sales report was also bullish. Still, Dell said tech budgets of the biggest firms remain tight.
