Kurt Busch claims that Dale Earnhardt-who knew about such things-always said the driver with the most noise usually wins. Yeah, but ol' Ironhead probably never figured that would ever apply to Busch.
It did-for the entire Bristol weekend. NASCAR's newest bad boy was booed during Friday afternoon qualifying, before Saturday night's race, during the 500-lap slugfest and after. They booed because 1) the 25-year-old was defiantly unapologetic for his role in the Aug. 17 incident with Jimmy Spencer at MIS, and 2) he clearly bumped second-running and home-state hero Sterling Marlin in Turn One at lap 373.
"He just ran all over me and it was a bonehead move,'' said Marlin, among 30-some drivers who spun or wrecked. "I pulled up to let him go and he ran into me. I don't guess Spencer got him hard enough.''
Busch began the 500-lapper on probation for acting up the previous weekend. Originally considered a victim, opinions turned when fans heard tape of him telling crewmen he wanted to flatten Spencer's fender. Afterward, in the garage, Spencer leaned into Busch's car and punched him. TNT's in-car camera missed the lick, but caught Busch's brief, expletive-filled threat against Spencer.
NASCAR barred Spencer from Bristol, put him on probation through Dec. 31 and fined him $25,000. Busch got probation through Dec. 31, probably time enough to learn to keep his mouth shut.
