Motorola sells out Symbian stake
Nokia will become the top shareholder in the mobile software venture when it and British software partner Psion buy Motorola's 19% stake. Motorola wants to focus on phones that use Sun Micro's Java, though it's also rumored to be working on one that uses Microsoft's Smartphone software. Motorola will still license Symbian.
BellSouth-AT&T merger talks stall
In the latest hang-up in nearly two years of on-and-off talks, BellSouth wants to pay only a small premium over AT&T's current trading price of about $22 a share, BusinessWeek reported, citing sources. AT&T wants $25 a share, or $20 bil. Other local phone giants such as Verizon and SBC also are eyeing the long-distance giant.
Nextel boosted by outlook, stake
Shares of the U.S. wireless operator could double in 18-24 months due to rapid profit growth, BusinessWeek said. Also, Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway disclosed it has bought at least $320 mil in Nextel Communications debt and preferred shares since the start of 2002. Nextel rose 7% to 19.33.
